Ear's dedication to the beauty of small, accidental, blurry moments had made them a shining light for modern archivists, old video fanatics, and glitchers.
Their first work The Most Dear and The Future , felt somewhere between a confessional booth and a two person choir — whispers from a fresh debut, vulnerable, collected inside. Delicate vocal harmonies placed quiet thoughts between crashing electronics as each song sputtered, fritzed, bounced. Rumspringa , on the other hand, feels like the result of a more natural forage.
Rumspringa revels in the simple pleasure of sounds others might deem too harsh or too simple. On the title track, the crisp clip of a guitar loop settles alongside the click of a soda can — Yaelle and Jonah make promises to unseen lovers. Catching the grooves in these tracks feels like sticking your foot in the deepest section of a hike instead of the bit-shifting you might experience at the top of their last tape.
Glassy tracks like "Water and Power" and "Threads" bring more smooth and subtle sounds to their world, whilst "Will" starts candle-lit enough until it shrivels up into an oscillating throb hard enough to knock you off your feet. A24 Music, indeed.
Another star track to me is "F", a presumed reference to 'paying respect' – an extremely danceable track undoubtedly a joy to headbang to, despite being on stage or off it.
